Successful teachers develop through experience, assessment and self-reflection. As an undergraduate instructor at UC Irvine, I use active learning activities to engage my students. Learning biology can be fun! In lab, I interact with every student and pose challenging questions. In discussion sections, I use games such as "Kahoot!", "Jeopardy" and "Heads Up". Afterwards, I use minute papers and collaborative group projects to assess student learning. To improve, I evaluate student midterm feedback and analyze the wealth of pedagogical literature. These strategies allow me to modify my techniques to best create an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
